It rains mucho in Salvador Urbina! On our way over to meet Don Gato & his wife, we got caught in the downpour. We arrived at their colorful home soaked and cold, but were soon warmed by steaming coffee in our hands. Such sweet people!
Don Gato (nickname) was one of the founders of Café Justo 13 years ago, but now stays closer to home growing coffee plants in his nursery. Don Gato shared with us that he is who's responsible for paved roads in Salvador Urbina and other things that have greatly benefitted the community. What a legacy!
Another active member of the co-op, Ildefonso, invited us all over to his beautiful house that night for tamales & lively conversation. Ildesfonso's wife passed away from cancer a year ago, so his daughters were our lovely hosts. We also had the pleasure of meeting his son, who's a lawyer.
Over dinner, Ildesonso talked about how, even when the price of coffee has been at it's lowest, he has pinched & saved enough to pay for three of his children's educations. You could sense his pride when he told us that his son is a lawyer and two of his daughters are teachers. He showed off his nice, crisp clothes & talked of how he wore old clothes when his kids were studying, but now! Now his professional kids buy him nice shirts and pants. Sharp.
